Child Life

What is a child life therapist? A child life therapist is a specially trained professional who helps children and their families understand and manage challenging life events and stressful health care experiences.

Therapists hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, human development, psychology, child life and other related fields. They must pass an exam to obtain certified child life specialist certification. Child life therapists also help with communication between patients and families and the medical staff.
What can child life therapists do to help?

Child life therapists can:
• Teach patients and families about procedures and surgeries
• Provide techniques for pain management and relaxation as well as help improve coping skills
• Help create a comfortable environment for patients
• Promote patient- and family-centered care
• Support and help distract patients and families during medical procedures
• Give tours of the hospital before surgery
• Encourage socialization in a fun and safe environment
• Use medical play to encourage expression of feelings
• Offer pet therapy programs (with some restrictions)
• Plan special community-oriented visits and events
• Provide coping techniques and education for patients’ siblings
• Provide end-of-life and bereavement support
