Ackerly Child Psychiatric
Inpatient Service Comprehensive care in a therapeutic environment

Kosair Children’s Hospital offers inpatient psychiatric care through the Ackerly Child Psychiatric Inpatient Service. Our mission is to help children and families reach their potential in a nuturing and safe environment. We believe each child has worth and dignity, and therapeutic possibilities exist for all children. We provide comprehensive care in the most therapeutic environment for children ages 2 to 17 regardless of a family’s background or ability to pay.

Kosair Children’s Hospital offers comprehensive care serving children and teens with inpatient psychiatric care needs and is equipped to serve patients with developmental disabilities and autism. Our psychiatric service is unique. We are able to provide a full spectrum of specilized pediatric medical care while also caring for psychiatric issues.

Multidisciplinary team
The Kosair Children’s Hospital child psychiatry team is made up of a variety of talented, knowledgeable, compassionate and caring individuals. Each child will interact with and receive care from a wide range of psychiatric professionals. Individualized care is provided to meet the needs of the child and family to promote success not only during the hospital stay, but also after being discharged.

Our care team is composed of:

  • Physicians
  • Residents
  • Certified psychiatric nurses
  • Psychiatric nurses
  • Licensed social workers
  • Mental health associates
  • Clinical nurse specialists
  • Care managers
  • Jefferson County Public Schools educators
  • Administrative assistants
  • Staff from the Nursing Leadership Team, Pastoral Care, and Child Life and Expressive Therapy

Social worker consultation
Each patient and family will be assigned a social worker to provide support and teaching during times of crisis. The social worker can meet in therapeutic sessions with family members to assist in setting realistic goals for the patient while in the hospital and in the home setting. Social workers help families with discharge planning, as well as arranging follow-up care as needed.

Education
Upon admission, students are automatically enrolled in the Jefferson County Public Schools system to ensure they are not counted absent at their regular school. The educational program offered by the Ackerly Child Psychiatric Inpatient Service unit includes two teachers with special education certifications and an instructional assistant.

Students are evaluated to determine their reading and math skills. Small-group instruction is provided using a curriculum that meets state standards as well as individual needs and learning styles.
