Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The specialists in the Pediatric Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery service of Kosair Children's Hospital provides treatment for children who need restoration, repair or reconstruction of body structures. 

Following are some of the conditions most commonly treated through this service:

  • Cleft lip and palate
  • Craniofacial anomalies, including deformities of the skull, orbits, facial bones, ears and nose
  • Vascular malformations and hemangiomas
  • Congenital and traumatic hand deformities
  • Traumatic craniofacial deformities and facial fractures
  • Burn reconstruction
  • Pigmented birthmarks
  • Lower extremity reconstruction
  • Plagiocephaly with stenosis

Specific services provided include:

  • Comprehensive surgical management of all pediatric plastic surgery problems
  • Nonsurgical treatment of skull deformities
  • Laser surgery for vascular malformations and hemangiomas

The Craniofacial Disorder Team at Kosair Children's Hospital is a multidisciplinary group of specialists who have specific training and interest in the evaluation and management of infants, children and young adults with complex craniofacial deformities including:

  • Cleft lip and palate
  • Craniosynostasis
  • Craniofacial syndromes
  • Facial clefts
  • Facial synostosis
  • Ear anomalies
  • Orbital deformities

The team meets regularly to direct the ongoing care of the developing child.  The goal is to normalize the patient's appearance and enhance function.
