What is Pediatric Palliative Care?

Pediatric palliative care is medical care that focuses on treating the pain, symptoms and stress of children and families facing complex or life-threatening medical conditions. This care is provided along with any other treatment the child receives, so they can remain comfortable at any state of illness. 

What is the Hearts and Hands Palliative Care Program?

For a child facing a complex or life-threatening illness, the Hearts and Hands Program at Kosair Children's Hospital is an inpatient consultation service which offers help to the child and family. We promote the best quality of life for hospitalized children with life-threatening conditions, their families, communities and medical providers through education, advocacy, communications and palliative expertise.

How does the Hearts and Hands Program help?

Working with the existing health care team, we provide:

  • Assistance with symptom control
  • Assist patients, families and medical team in decision making
  • Facilitation of transition support
  • Grief and bereavement support
  • Education regarding palliative care principles

We also can engage experts in child life, psychology, social services, spiritual care, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nutrition and others as needed. We promise to help your child live to the fullest, listen to you, recognize that you and your child are unique, respect your beliefs, walk the journey with you, care for your whole family, provide information and connect you with quality healthcare professionals.

Who are the Hearts and Hands Team?

Our staff consists of a variety of experienced, qualified medical personnel, including:

  • Pediatrician
  • Clinical nurse managers
  • Nurse clinician
  • Social service
  • Pastoral care specialists

Members of the Hearts and Hands team also can collaborate with child life specialists, expressive art therapists, psychology services, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nutritionists and care providers as needed.
