The Burn Unit at Kosair Children's Hospital is Kentucky's first and only burn unit exclusively for children. We care for patients with major and minor burn injuries, electrical injuries and those undergoing reconstructive plastic surgery following a burn.
The Burn Unit is strategically located in close proximity to the "Just for Kids" Critical Care Center where more critical cases receive treatment. A large tub designed specifically for burn care is located in the unit as well.
Our burn unit staff, along with advocates from the Children's Hospital Foundation Office of Child Advocacy, helped spearhead an initiative that resulted in an FTC regulation requiring improvements to make butane lighters child-safe.
Our special services include:
- Complete surgery of burn wounds and other trauma
- Physical and occupational therapy
- Referral for long-term reconstructive plastic surgical care through the Kentucky Commission for Special Health Care Needs' Burn and Plastic Surgery Clinic
- Child Life/Expressive Therapy
- Social Services
- Pastoral Care
As Kentucky's only free standing, tertiary care facility dedicated to caring for children, Kosair Children's Hospital offers comprehensive pediatric medical services and treatment programs in a child-friendly atmosphere.
